Alternative Printing Surfaces
For Monday (10/17), we'll start exploring alternate surfaces for printing or inkjet transfer
***BRING***
Bring a variety of artist papers (printmaking, watercolor, or otherwise). Papers should have an average to moderate texture/tooth. Can be any color, but lighter (off-white) colors will probably allow more options. We can even try linoleum, wood, plexi, etc.
Have an open mind about this... the more experimental you get, the greater the unknown, and potentially, the greater the rewards.

SPB Artist Talk/Presentation
Critique with Sheila Pree Bright
Wednesday 10/12
All images for SPB critique must be in print form. Things to consider:
- Coherent group of images—not just a random pile o' stuff. Its best that pictures come from a single body of work you are hoping to gain feedback on. This could be images from project 1, color portfolio, or even project 2, if you are far enough along to get some early feedback.
- 8-12 images
- Exquisitely printed, appropriate size. (at least 8x 10)
- Yes, prints can be run for you on the large printer—submit files by Friday, 7th, first thing in the morning.
- Prints should have no dings, scratches, damage, etc.
- Matting is preferred.
- Prints should be presented in some kind of a portfolio box or case
- Bring a notebook to jot down feedback
- Some sort of artist statement is preferred. Be able to at least express what you are doing with the work, verbally.
Critique begins at the start of class.
Project 2
10/19, Preliminary Critique. Combination of work prints and projection images. Project should be well along. At least 5 work prints to form basis for discussion. 1st draft project/artist statement. All work due by class time.
10/26, Final prints, project/artist statement due. All work due by class time.

Project 1
Due Monday 9/26
Plan to turn in/show for critique:
- Digital files as jpegs (1500 pixels longest side—use image processor in bridge)
- High quality prints at size appropriate for your project. Note that larger-format printing will need to be coordinated with print-lab schedule.
Color Portfolio
Revised: Due Wednesday 9/22
A portfolio of 8 color balanced, well printed images from the color explorations you've done. Choose most compelling images from across all exercises, but keep in mind that a portfolio should have some sort of coherence. Images do not need to be matted, but should be handled and presented with care. A portfolio box or binder is fine. 8"x10" paper
Optional:
11" x 14". If you want to go with this larger size, an equivalent of 4 11 x 14 size prints can be printed at no cost. The remaining 4 will cost $10. Matte paper.
Note that large format prints still need to be color balanced. We can run free tests in class.
Or alternatively, you can print on your own tabloid size paper for "free"

Reading and Shooting
Due 9/7
Read chapters 6 & 7, textbook.
Shooting: Do the "Problem Solving" exercise on page 115. Shoot several variations for each category (Complementary Contrast, Active and passive, etc.) . You should have at least 72 images total. Edit group down to strongest images for each category.

Shooting exercise
Due 8/31
Shoot at least 36 images that relate the color you chose in class today to its compliment. So for instance, if you worked with green in class, create images that explore a relationship between green and magenta. Find interesting subject matter (that carries the colors) and create graphically strong images (working with scale, placement, depth of field, focus, etc.). How interesting can you make it?
Shoot RAW files.
